Moulded ABS

A cylindrical shaft standing on the floor, topped by an overhanging hemispherical cap that pivots on its axis to direct the light. Two elementary volumes, no visible joints, no ornament.
In 1972 Gae Aulenti designed for Artemide a family of three lamps in moulded ABS — the Pileino table lamp, the Mezzo Pileo and the Pileo floor lamp — repeating the same silhouette at three scales. The model belongs to the moment when moulded plastic ceased to be a cheap substitute and became, for Italian manufacturers, a design material in its own right.
A period example in the floor version, the tallest of the three. Its base bears the manufacturer’s original marking: S.p.A. Artemide Milano — modello Pileo-Mezzo Pileo — design Gae Aulenti — made in Italy.
