Ettore Sottsass
Ettore Sottsass (Innsbruck, 1917 – Milan, 2007) graduated from the Politecnico di Torino in 1939 and opened his studio in Milan in 1947. From 1958 he worked for Olivetti: typewriters, computers, office furniture. It was this industrial work, spanning thirty years, that placed him at the centre of Italian design before the wider public came to know his name.
In October 1981 he founded Memphis in Milan with the industrialist Ernesto Gismondi. Patterned laminates, stacked volumes, a reversal of the hierarchy between noble and industrial materials: the group broke with functionalism and made the object a statement rather than a service.
Galerie 90 follows his work across its whole range — Memphis bookcases, furniture produced by Poltronova, glass by Vistosi, ceramics and later vases. Pieces already sold remain on display: they form the inventory of what has passed through the gallery.
